NBC launching 'NFL RedZone'-style show for 2024 Paris Olympics coverage

"NFL RedZone" host Scott Hanson is joining NBC Sports' coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

On Wednesday, NBC Sports announced Hanson, NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano and "American Ninja Warrior" hosts Matt Iseman and Akbar Gbajabiamila will host "Gold Zone," a whip-around show that will stream on Peacock from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET from July 27 to Aug. 10.

"With up to 40 events happening simultaneously during the Paris Olympic Games, 'Gold Zone' will present viewers with the best and most compelling moments happening at any time," the network said. "'Gold Zone's' daily offering will provide viewers with the most comprehensive and all-encompassing live whip-around coverage of any Olympic Games to date."

Bringing in Hanson to be the face of this show is a smart move for the network. He has hosted "NFL RedZone" since its inception in 2009, and recently retired NFL columnist Peter King called him a "treasure."

Olympic viewership has declined in recent years. The Tokyo Olympics averaged 15.5M viewers compared to 26.7M viewers for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics averaged 10.7M viewers, making the event the least-watched Games in primetime in NBC history.

NBC is betting on Peacock to improve viewership and attract new audiences. Along with "Gold Zone," every event will air live on the streaming service.

"The awareness of Peacock, which now has 30 million subscribers, is significantly higher than it was for the Tokyo Olympics," wrote Richard Deitsch of The Athletic. "Peacock proved it can aggregate a significant audience for sports. The Kansas City Chiefs-Miami Dolphins exclusive Peacock game drew 23 million viewers (including a substantial home-market turnout)."

Perhaps Hanson's popularity and Peacock's growth will make "Gold Zone" a hit, helping the Olympics draw massive audiences again.
