Depending on when you grew up skating, Van Wastell was one of those dudes who was simply cooler than cool. His natural, effortless style. His unique bag of tricks. His approach to spots, just in general... again—cooler than cool.

Every year since his passing, Van's brother Eddie does something rad to celebrate his birthday on April 22nd, and this year he made a pretty awesome tribute video to remind us all (as if we'd ever forget) just how amazing, loved and admired Van was on and off the board. Take a look:

Two things that I really loved about this (besides all the timeless clips) were Andrew Allen talking about the frontside 5050 to back 180s that Van would do, as well as backside 5050 front 180s (both popping out early) because as a kid growing up and seeing that, it was like my mind opened in a way it never had before. Like, whoa... never even thought of that!

Van was super original and always had a way of making everything look awesome. And it was during a time when nobody was really doing stuff like that, you know? I won't say those tricks are simple by any means, but it was a perfect example of less is more in such an impactful way. Keep your laser flips! This is what I want.

And secondly, the Mikey Taylor quote when he says, "...for him it was so effortless... it was like walking," because I have to agree that that's such a perfect way of explaining how Van looked on a skateboard. Effortless. Fun. And totally infectious.

While I didn't know Van personally, he still impacted my life the same way he did countless others, through his skating and his clear positivity. He always seemed to be smiling and having a good time—truly enjoying himself—and that's how he'll always be remembered as far as I'm concerned.

We miss you, Van! Happy (belated) Birthday!
