By the time that Chelsea academy players reach 19, they are already usually well known to fans and have been hyped up hugely.

Alex Matos, who arrived from Norwich as an 18 year old last summer, is flying under the radar then. Blues fans aren’t quite yet aware of his potential, but they will be soon.

He’s been training with the first team, has been on the bench a number of times, and has come on in games against Fulham and Blackburn this season.

The Athletic’s profile on Matos, released today, has some quotes about the midfielder that will get fans very excited, we think:

“Alex had unbelievable athleticism, mental drive. He is just very, very, very hungry to improve, to better himself,” said Gregg Broughton, Norwich’s former academy director.

With injuries and suspensions absolutely tearing the squad apart right now, we’re almost sure we’ll see Matos get a few minutes tomorrow against Crystal Palace. It will be the perfect moment to celebrate his continued rise.
