Tonight 2008 UEFA champions league winner Manchester United comes up against 1996 winners Ajax FC in an Europa league encounter at the Amsterdam ArenA.
The Red Devils go into todays game with a lot of confidence after their 2-1 defeat against rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford, in a fierce match that saw Wayne Rooney score a brace.
On the other hand, Ajax comes into this game with a depleted squad, with some key players like Andre Ooijer and Gregory Van der Weil, who play in the defense, out as a result of injury.
Not only will they be missing key components in the defense, they will also be in action without midfielders Eyong Enoh and Derk Boerrighter because of hamstring and back injuries respectively. Their striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, who seems to be suffering chronic back injury is also doubtful for this evening’s match.
In this clash between two European greats, one great player who will be keenly following proceedings is Dutch legend Edwin van der Sar. The reliable goalkeeper is currently in Armsterdam to see his two former teams fight it out.
‘It’s good to see the boys.’ said van der Sar.
‘It’s always nice to see some familiar faces. I had a great time in Manchester for six years, so it’s not something you can forget lightly.’
‘I know the Ajax manager, Frank de Boer, very well,’ he told MUTV.
‘He’s been a good friend of mine for the last 20 years. So I hope he gets the result he wants. But, in general, I think the whole Van der Sar family are firm United fans.”
