Premier League icon turned pundit Alan Shearer has raised doubts about Tottenham star James Maddison’s chances of securing a spot in the England squad for the upcoming Euros 2024 tournament.

Shearer’s comments come amidst a rollercoaster season for the talented midfielder, who made a high-profile move from Leicester City to Tottenham Hotspur in a £40 million transfer.

Maddison initially dazzled fans with a scintillating start to his Tottenham career, directly contributing to 8 goals in his first 11 Premier League appearances.

Beyond his on-field influence, Maddison’s impact off the pitch was significant for fostering a positive atmosphere within the club, thanks to his friendly personality and leadership qualities.

However, his momentum was disrupted by an ankle injury sustained against Chelsea in November. The injury sidelined him for nearly two and a half months, disrupting his rhythm and affecting his subsequent performances upon return.

Maddison’s dip in form is concerning for club and country

Since recovering from the injury setback, Maddison has struggled to replicate his earlier form, managing just 1 goal and 2 assists in 11 games compared to his initial tally of 3 goals and 5 assists.

His form has started to become a point of concern for Tottenham fans and surely for Gareth Southgate as well with Euros 2024 starting in a couple of months.

And Shearer believes that the Tottenham man may end up missing being excluded from the squad travelling to Germany in June along with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Newcastle legend told The Rest Is Football podcast:

“I don’t see it as that straightforward. If it’s a squad of 26 he (Trent) has a much better chance. If it’s a squad of 23 then I think he may struggle to get in. Maybe not Madders, either.”
