Wayne Rooney appears to be heading nearer the Manchester United exit door after it emerged the unsettled striker is ‘angry and confused’ over his treatment by the club. Rooney’s unhappiness at United has been an open secret following a season in which he often played second fiddle to Robin van Persie, with departing manager Sir Alex Ferguson laying United’s dirty linen out to view at the end of the campaign by confirming, with more than a hint of disdain, that the player who had once been the apple of his eye now wanted to leave the club. It had been thought new United boss David Moyes could build bridges this summer but, having initially reported positive talks with Rooney over his future, the Scot threw a different light on the matter at the weekend, saying he viewed the England international as merely a squad player next term. ‘Overall, my thought on Wayne is that if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie we are going to need him and I want as many options as possible,’ Moyes said. Those words have riled Rooney, with a source close to the player today saying: ‘Wayne is confused and angry.’ The Merseysider, who was sent home from United’s tour of east Asia and Australia with a hamstring injury, believes he has nothing to prove at the club where he has won four Premier League titles and a Champions League winners’ medal.
