Newcastle recorded its first Premier League win in six matches by beating 10-man Wigan 3-0 on Monday after two goals by Demba Ba and another from Gael Bigirimana.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew had been under pressure with his injury-hit team winning only one league match since he signed an eight-year contract extension in late September to sit just two points above the relegation zone.
But his players responded to the 12th-minute dismissal of Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa for fouling Papiss Cisse in the box in a contentious decision with the players appearing to be shoulder to shoulder.
''It was nice to get a break - and I think it was a break, I'm not a great lover of that rule with the penalty and the sending off,'' Pardew said. ''But at the time I thought it was a penalty, the defender lifts his arm at the end of the challenge. The referee had a tough decision to make, but I think it was a penalty and obviously it put us in a great position.''
Ba converted the resulting penalty, and scored again in the 21st minute from an error by goalkeeper Al Habsi at St. James Park.
Those strikes took Ba to 10 league goals for the season, drawing level with Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, Liverpool forward Luis Suarez and Swansea attacker Michu at the top of the scoring chart.
Bigirimana, a second-half substitute, struck a left-footed curving shot into the net in the 71st for his first goal for the club.
Wigan kept its shape in the second half despite the numerical disadvantage but never threatened to get back in the match. Unsurprisingly, Wigan manager Roberto Martinez thought the result pivoted on the opening 45 minutes.
''It became a very, very difficult game in 10 minutes, giving up a two-goal cushion and a man down,'' he said. ''But you will get adversity in football and I'm proud of our reaction in the second half, we never gave up or felt sorry for ourselves.
''(The sending off) was a big decision, I think he needed to be certain about a decision like that. The ball was between the two players, Maynor Figueroa is entitled to challenge for that ball and I thought it was shoulder-to-shoulder. It was a fair race and both players challenged for the ball.''
Newcastle stayed in 14th place but is five points above the drop zone. Wigan fell one spot to 16th and has two points more than 18th-place Southampton.
The biggest concern on the night for Pardew was Ba's sparkling form attracting clubs aware of the Senegal international's release clause in his contract that could hasten his departure.
''We've tried to do a deal and take the clause out,'' Pardew said. ''We've not managed it yet, so it's always there hanging over us and that makes it difficult for me, for Demba and the club.''
BEST OF MAXIM
The Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is still trying to solve the strike partnership dilemma that exists at Newcastle – and while both Senegal strikers Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba are good strikers, they hardly complement each other, because their styles are so similar. Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba together last season In all honesty we [...]
Alan Pardew is remaining tight lipped about the January transfer window, and we wouldn’t expect him to talk openly about our targets as a certain Graeme Souness used to do when he was manager at Newcastle. The Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has said that fortune was on Newcastle’s side last night in our 3-0 win against Wigan – and that was Newcastle biggest league win of the season, but it was against a 10 man Wigan side for much of the game. John Carver and Alan Pardew huddle last night [...]
Demba Ba scored twice to ease the pressure on manager Alan Pardew as Newcastle beat 10-man Wigan 3-0 on Monday night.
The Magpies came into the game on the back of four consecutive Premier League defeats but this never looked like being a fifth from the moment Maynor Figueroa shoved over Papiss Cisse in the box.

A relived Alan Pardew talked to Newcastle United video reporter Rob Scanlon after the game on nufcTV, and the Newcastle manager said it was about time Newcastle had a little luck, and once we were 1-0 up and Wigan were reduced to 10 men, there was only going to be one winner. Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has admitted that when the team hasn’t won in the last seven games played, desperation start to creep in as the players literally try too hard to win a game, and they start making some poor decisions and trying to do other players” jobs. Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is said to planning a bid for Adam Lallana, Southampton’s very good central midfielder in Jnauary, and just a month after arriving at Newcastle in 2010, there was a report we issued that indicated Alan wanted to bring the youngster to Newcastle, but as far as we know no bids [...]

With a tough game at Fulham next Monday night, and a very tough December schedule coming up, and with Newcastle having already qualified for the knock-out stages of the Europa League, Alan Pardew will likely play a weakened side tomorrow night in Bordeaux. Newcastle’s best player last night was Sylvain Marveaux, and he was given a surprise start by manager Alan Pardew, but the lad must have been impressing in training, because he was Newcastle’s star man last night in his best game ever for Newcastle and he leads in our poll for Man of the Match with 37%, just edging [...]
Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul admitted their 3-0 win over Wigan was a "massive" three points.
United had not won a game since 28th October and Alan Pardew's men had lost their last four Premier League matches.
But the result was not in doubt from the 13th minute when Maynor Figueroa was sent off for a debatable shove in the box and Demba Ba slotted home the...
Youngsters Conor Newton and Yven Moyo are among a 20-man Newcastle squad which belatedly left Tyneside for Bordeaux on Wednesday afternoon.
Midfielders Newton, 21, and 20-year-old Moyo are yet to make a senior appearance for the club, and have been included along with the slightly more experienced Gael Bigirimana, Mehdi Abeid and Adam Campbell as manager Alan Pardew uses the depth...
It’s a fair bet that if Newcastle can rekindle the spirit, energy and determination our lads showed at Stoke last week, then we have an excellent chance of winning the game tonight against Wigan, and that will be a massive relief for everybody connected with the Newcastle United football club.
