Yukihito Taguchi-USA TODAY Sports

Could a Bayer Leverkusen full-back be Manchester City’s ideal Kyle Walker replacement? With Kyle Walker closer to the end of his career than the beginning, there will be a time when Manchester City will have to find a replacement right-back. It could potentially be this summer where City turns to the market to find a new right-back. With that in mind, could a Bayer Leverkusen full-back be the ideal signing to potentially replace the City captain?

Jeremie Frimpong has had an astounding season for Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen. He has featured 34 times in all competitions for Xabi Alonso’s all conquering side. Frimpong has added an astounding 11 goals and 11 assists so far this season for Leverkusen. That level of production is astounding for a full-back. His strong form has reportedly caught the eye of Manchester City and their local rivals Manchester United ahead of this summer.

The young full-back is an attacking powerhouse that’s plays primarily as a right wing back for Bayer Leverkusen. The strengths of his game are as an attacking full-back rather than defensively. Given the way Xabi Alonso sets up his side, it allows Frimpong to shine in attack. His pace, delivery, eye for a pass, and his finishing ability are elite, especially for a full-back. There are, however, deficiencies in his game defensively, which need to be improved. But as a player, he does appear to have the necessary attributes to potentially play in a Pep Guardiola team.

Phil Thomas has reported for the Sun that there could be a summer transfer battle between Manchester City and Manchester United for Frimpong. Thomas also reports that there is a £35 million release clause in Frimpong’s contract, which becomes active this summer. Furthermore, Thomas adds that given that Frimpong spent over a decade in the Manchester City academy, he would be classified as a homegrown player if Manchester City did sign the dynamic full-back

A time is coming when Manchester City will have to replace Kyle Walker. They could do a lot worse than sign a dynamic Bayer Leverkusen full-back who is an attacking weapon to be the potential replacement for the Manchester City captain. Jeremie Frimpong appears to have the ideal skill set and is at the ideal age to shine at the world champions.
