It was one of the greatest finals of all time after a back-and-forth game incredibly finished 3-3.

France looked well below par for 70 minutes but the brilliance of Kylian Mbappe gave them a fighting chance when he netted a hat-trick for his nation.

Now weeks later, Deschamps has claimed that there were ‘four or five players’ who weren’t at the ‘right level’.

“I’m not going to take aim at any individual player, but in that starting eleven there were maybe at least four or five players who weren’t at the right level physically.” He told RMC.

“It was the first final for a lot of the players, it was a very particular situation.

“Factually, [though] there were at least five players in the starting eleven who were not at the right level for such a match against such an opponent.”
