The clear favourites for the game were Newcastle, Sunderland hadn’t won a game all season, have already sacked one managed and lost 4-0 last week in Gus Poyet’s first game in charge. There’s no love lost between Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini Before we go into the events of the weekend let’s have a little look at the backstory of these two managers. When Mourinho took over at Real Madrid it was at the expense of Pellegrini. The Chilean manager amassed a record amount of points (96) in his last season at the Bernabeu and the Madrid directors admitted that he would have kept his job Mourinho not become available. A bitter war of words ensued during their time in Spain but this weekend they faced each other for the first time on English soil. Sparks flew once more. Pellegrini was critical of Mourinho’s exuberant celebration of Torres late winner and did not shake hands with his opposite number when the full time whistle came. Mark your calendars for February 1st, round two at the Etihad. SAS are showing no signs of slowing down This weekend saw a stunning hat trick from Luis Suarez and a sublime lob from Daniel Sturridge. The Premier League’s’ hottest strike partnership shows no sign of slowing down. That means that it’s a total of 14 goals from 9 games combined, a figure which is even more impressive when you consider that Suarez’s 6 league goals have come in just four games after serving his biting ban. The surprise package isn’t a surprise any more Southampton marched on this weekend to another three points. The Saints are playing well and have impressed home and away this season. Their defence has impressed as well, this weekends’ result meant that they have now kept six clean sheets in nine games in the league. A win at Anfield and a point from Old Trafford are just a few of Southamptons’ achievements this year and if they keep playing like this Europe could be on the cards next season. Lukaku wins the battle of the Belgians Christian Benteke and Romelu Lukaku have been in impressive form this season and come the summer they could be competing for a starting place for Belgium at the World Cup. This weekend it was Lukaku staked his claim to that starting spot. The 6’3 striker scored a crucial goal to put Everton one up while Benteke saw his first half penalty well saved by Tim Howard.
