Emre Can revealed in a recent interview that just weeks after he left Liverpool for Juventus he had to undergo surgery for thyroid cancer.

The German midfielder was a staple of Jurgen Klopp’s side when he took over the job at Liverpool in 2015. Can remained at the club for four years until he left in 2018 after failing to agree to a new contract with the side.

He then moved to Juventus where the Italian doctors diagnosed him and sent him for urgent surgery. The club released a statement at the time but did not say that it was thyroid cancer.

In an interview with Football Italia, Can revealed just how serious the surgery was.

‘I had thyroid cancer and I needed to undergo surgery urgently,’ he said.

‘This has changed a lot in my life. You can have a lot of money, you can have everything, but health is the most important thing.

‘It’s part of life and I suggest everyone undergo screenings, it doesn’t matter how healthy one thinks he is, if you find out about these things in time, you can act.’

Luckily the surgery was a success and he was able to return to the game that he loved. The 29-year-old is currently playing in Germany for Borussia Dortmund.
