German press insists Xhaka not yet certain to move to Bundesliga

Granit Xhaka is set to leave the Emirates after nearly eight incident-packed years. Many Gooners were certain that his five-star performance over the weekend, scoring a brace to finish the season with seven goals and seven assists, was the final time they saw him in an Arsenal jersey. In fact, farewell messages began to flood in shortly after.

While many expected Xhaka to be unveiled in the coming days at Bayer Leverkusen (who are said to be interested in signing him), the German football website Kicker has an interesting claim concerning whether or not the deal will go through.

They claim Arsenal have yet to discuss his departure with Bayer Leverkusen or any other club, despite the fact that they may demand at least €15 million to allow the Swiss international to leave. Not only that, but they imply that unless a suitable successor is found, Xhaka will not be permitted to go. Before releasing one of their key midfielders, Arsenal wants to ensure that they have trustworthy midfield options.

Few can argue that Arteta’s holding on to Arsenal’s No. 34 is significantly more favourable than his release. Nonetheless, the midfielder is unlikely to return to the Emirates next season. Arteta is interested in Ilkay Gundogan, Mason Mount, Declan Rice, and Moises Caicedo, all of whom have the potential to help the team move on from Xhaka.

Who would you want to replace Xhaka?
