Giani father: ‘No doctor on first ambulance’ after his son’s heart attack

Sandro Giani, the father of the Castelfiorentino player Mattia who died after an on-pitch heart attack, hit out at the authorities, claiming there was no doctor on the first ambulance.

The 26-year-old Italian footballer tragically passed away on Sunday after suffering a cardiac arrest followed by a seizure on the pitch during a match between his Castelfiorentino side and Lanciotto Campi in a competitive Eccellenza match (Italy’s 5th division).

Giani sadly passed away just hours before Roma defender Evan Ndicka suddenly collapsed during a Serie A match with Udinese. Luckily, the 24-year-old was rushed to hospital in stable condition and diagnosed with a suspected collapsed left lung, avoiding any cardiac issues.

Speaking on page five of today’s Gazzetta dello Sport, Sandro Giani hit out at the authorities for their handling of his son Mattia’s tragic death.

“The first ambulance arrived 15 minutes later and there was no doctor. Then a nurse came down from the stands to help. A second ambulance arrived shortly after and this time the doctor was there and used a defibrillator, but maybe it was too late.”

An investigation has been opened into Giani’s death to properly examine the incident and see if things could’ve been handled better by authorities.
