Joey Saputo celebrates ‘historic milestone’ as Bologna qualify for Champions League

Bologna owner Joey Saputo is going back to Bologna to celebrate a ‘historic milestone’ as the Rossoblu have qualified for the Champions League for the first time ever.

The Rossoblu had never played in the Champions League but did feature in the 1964-65 European Cup winning one match and losing twice.

Atalanta‘s 2-1 win over Roma on Sunday allowed the Rossoblu to mathematically qualify for next season’s Champions League with two games to spare. Thiago Motta’s side had beaten Napoli 2-0 at the Stadio Maradona on Saturday.

“I’m coming back to Bologna to celebrate this historic milestone alongside the entire city,” club owner Saputo told Bologna’s official website.

“Bologna is back in Europe and has made it into the top competition, the Champions League, 60 years after being in the European Cup.
