Following Celtic’s win against Feyenoord, Brendan Rodgers quickly shifted from enjoyment of the moment to reiterating the requirement of adding quality to the squad. It has been a thread that has been constant in recent weeks as the Irishman assesses the squad and after the Friday night report regarding Gustaf Lagerbielke, it is clear that the club will be acting on the manager’s wishes.

Rodgers reiterated his point about his Celtic squad needing quality after the midweek win against Feyenoord. The Scottish Champions won 2-1 thanks to a goal from Lagerbielke, which was the first home UCL win in over ten years.

Stephen McGowan reported on Mail Online that the club would be open to offers for Lagerbielke in January, despite signing him for £3m. Assistant Manager John Kennedy also confirmed that there would be departures in numbers from centre back – with Nat Phillips and Yuki Kobayashi expected to depart in January.

Rodgers said that he would have had the chance to assess the squad ahead of the January window with a number of outgoings to reduce the size of the squad. Lagerbielke has attributes that would make him a decent first team player but the emergence of Liam Scales has pushed him down the rankings in the manager’s eyes and it looks as if he will likely be moved on. It would be hoped that it isn’t a departure that the club come to regret.

It will be interesting to see what players are still here by the end of the January window with the manager emphasising that he wants the squad trimmed. Guys like James McCarthy, Alexandro Bernabei, Benjamin Siegrist and Kwon will be just some of the names linked with the exit.
