Lazio are reportedly eyeing a cut-price move for Sassuolo wingback Josh Doig as the ghost of relegation looms over the Emilian club.

The young Scotsman started his career at Hearts before moving to Hibernian in 2019. He has been plying his trade in Italian football since signing for Hellas Verona in 2022. Amidst the Gialloblu’s financial crisis, the 21-year-old was sold to Sassuolo in January.

However, his arrival coincided with the Neroerdi’s somberest period, with the club stuck in the 19th place in the Serie A table, looking increasingly destined to suffer relegation to Serie B. This scenario would likely result in an exodus out of the Mapei Stadium, and the Biancocelesti would be reportedly interested in one particular player.

According to La Repubblica (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Lazio will try to sign Doig in the summer, taking advantage of Sassuolo’s potential demotion to drive the price down, even though the player’s contract runs until 2028.

The source claims that the capital side has been keeping tabs on the Scotland international since his days at Verona where he stood out for his impressive displays. Doig is a left-back who would be capable of playing either as a left wingback or a left centre-back in Igor Tudor’s 3-4-2-1 formation.
