Manchester City’s defence has tightened up at just the right time

Manchester City’s defence has appeared to tighten up at the right time of the season. Defensive frailties had plagued the champions earlier in the season. But as the champions continue their chase for a fourth consecutive Premier League title, they have become solid once again at the back. It has been a welcome sight right when City have needed their defensive stability the most.

Earlier this season, Manchester City’s defence was prone to leaking goals. It was often quick counter attacks that saw the world champions concede. This weakness was on display in City’s two draws with Chelsea earlier this season. Tottenham also took advantage of this during their 3-all draw with Manchester City at the Etihad in early December. It had the potential to be a spanner in the works in the champions pursuit for a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

But in recent games, Manchester City’s defence has tightened up. They have kept clean sheets in three of their past four Premier League matches, including yesterday’s 4-nil win over Fulham. With their defence back at their best, it has seen Pep Guardiola’s side make their traditional surge towards another League title. All over the pitch, the world champions have gone up another gear of late. City’s defence is just one of the areas where the champions have risen.

Speaking after City’s 4-nil win over Fulham, goalkeeper Ederson highlighted the importance of Manchester City’s defence. He believes it is a key part of their chase for more silverware this season. He told mancity.com: “It’s so important to defend good because some teams try to counter attack, but the team played good and keep the ball, take good touches, good finishes and a good result for today. It (the title race) is in our hands. We have two games left, and we go away again in the next game. The team is so confident, focused and has the mentality to go again.”

Manchester City will hope their defensive stability carries through in their final two Premier League games of the season. If it does, it may be a critical factor in guiding their chase for history this season.
