Manchester United to Lose ‘Talented and Dynamic’ Player to Premier League Rivals
News Images

Erik ten Hag has been meticulous in his squad selection during his reign at Manchester United. Players who do not meet the quality he demands of them often find themselves searching for playing time outside of Old Trafford. January was always going to be a month where Red Devils on the fringe would depart the club, and David Ornstein has reported that a well-known name is leaving the English outfit.

Manchester United End Sergio Reguilon Loan Deal and Return The Left-Back to Tottenham

Break Clause Activated

The Englishman reported in an article for The Athletic that United were triggering “a break clause to cut short” the loan move of Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilon. Injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia had required Ten Hag to take immediate action to secure squad depth for the backline.

Now that the two regulars have neared match-fitness, the 27-year-old’s services are no longer needed. Ten Hag deployed him in a dozen fixtures this season, including eight Premier League matches but he is not going to add to that tally according to the Athletic.

Ornstein noted that due to Reguilon only playing for one team so far this season, “he could still play for another club should he leave again during the transfer window.” Tottenham have been fielding 21-year-old Destiny Udogie at left-back this campaign, but the Spaniard’s veteran presence could offer him some hope of competing for the starting spot.

Reguilon’s Trying Career & Future at Tottenham

Despite his numerous achievements, Reguilon has been unable to find a permanent home. A Club World Cup winner with Madrid, and Europa League winner with Sevilla, the veteran left-back has played for five clubs in six years including three loans. Still, he has been described as “talented and dynamic,” and wherever he goes his club is playing at the highest levels of European football.

Not long after news broke that Reguilon would be returning to Tottenham, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that he would be “expected to leave Spurs again during the January transfer window.” Borussia Dortmund are one of the teams vying for the services of the 27-year-old.
