Youngsters Conor Newton and Yven Moyo are among a 20-man Newcastle squad which belatedly left Tyneside for Bordeaux on Wednesday afternoon.
Midfielders Newton, 21, and 20-year-old Moyo are yet to make a senior appearance for the club, and have been included along with the slightly more experienced Gael Bigirimana, Mehdi Abeid and Adam Campbell as manager Alan Pardew uses the depth of his squad.
Senior striker Shola Ameobi is available after recovering from a groin injury and he was joined on the plane, which was delayed by snow, by keeper Tim Krul, defenders Danny Simpson, Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson and frontman Papiss Cisse.
But there were no places for injured trio Davide Santon (groin), Cheick Tiote and Demba Ba (both hamstring).
Bordeaux, like Newcastle, have already sealed their qualification to the next round and need only to avoid defeat to finish top of Group D.
Newcastle squad: Krul, Elliot, Simpson, Ferguson, Tavernier, Coloccini, Williamson, Perch, Anita, Bigirimana, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Amalfitano, Abeid, Newton, Moyo, Cisse, Shola Ameobi, Campbell, Ranger.
A number of academy graduates including Cole Stockton, Max Power and Jake Kirby have all played a part in Rovers' rise to pole position in League One this season.
And McMahon says all the hard work from their young charges is beginning to pay dividends.
"We've got good listeners, I think that's the difference from this season to the past," he told the club's official website.
"We've got young lads who are keen and enthusiastic. If you can give them the right advice and they believe in what we're doing they'll take it on board and listen more.
"They're not going to be the finished article; they're still young and learning their trade. But they're going about things in the right way. Their attitude is fantastic."
He added: "It's still a development phase for them, they're still babies in terms of learning the game and going in and doing a job on a regular basis. But I'm sure with the way we're going about things they'll get there."

A relived Alan Pardew talked to Newcastle United video reporter Rob Scanlon after the game on nufcTV, and the Newcastle manager said it was about time Newcastle had a little luck, and once we were 1-0 up and Wigan were reduced to 10 men, there was only going to be one winner. Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is said to planning a bid for Adam Lallana, Southampton’s very good central midfielder in Jnauary, and just a month after arriving at Newcastle in 2010, there was a report we issued that indicated Alan wanted to bring the youngster to Newcastle, but as far as we know no bids [...]
Alan Pardew was plain and straight talking after the game last night, and said he was disappointed with the displays of a number of Newcastle’s youngsters, and although the manager wanted to see a fight-back in the second half in an attempt to win the game, the team simply wasn’t good enough to be able [...]

Newcastle’s best player last night was Sylvain Marveaux, and he was given a surprise start by manager Alan Pardew, but the lad must have been impressing in training, because he was Newcastle’s star man last night in his best game ever for Newcastle and he leads in our poll for Man of the Match with 37%, just edging [...]
