Marcelo Gallardo was reportedly one of early options for Milan to replace Stefano Pioli. The biggest obstacle to hiring him is about to be removed. He’s negotiating a contract rescission with Al-Ittihad since his spell there hasn’t gone well, Gianluca Di Marzio informed.

He earned €22M for his lone season in Saudi Arabia. He will have to settle for a vastly inferior salary if he moves to Europe. On the other hand, the severance package could potentially help the suitors on his personal terms.

Gallardo joins Sergio Conceiçao, Paulo Fonseca, and Antonio Conte on the present Milan wish list. He was appointed by Al-Ittihad in November but collected eight wins, two draws, and six losses during his time at the helm. They finished fifth.

The former midfielder got his start on the bench at Nacional and then managed River Place for eight years. He won the Argentinian championship, the Copa Libertadores, and the Copa Sudamericana once and the domestic cup three times, among other trophies.

According to Calciomercato, Napoli will examine him as well. However, the most likely option is a return to River Plate, perhaps not only as the coach, as he might run to for president.

Our Take on Milan and Gallardo

The Rossoneri might have too many chefs in the kitchen if they come up with a new name every so often. He’d be an intriguing hire but might be too much of a gamble for a team that wants to return to winning ways pronto.
