AC Milan could enter the new season with five options in the holding midfield department, according to a report.

After the arrivals of Mike Maignan from Lille, Fikayo Tomori and Olivier Giroud from Chelsea, Sandro Tonali from Brescia, Fode Ballo-Toure from Monaco and Brahim Diaz from Real Madrid, MilanNews reports that the work on the market will not stop there.

The midfield department is still in need of bolstering because Franck Kessie and Ismael Bennacer will leave for the African Cup of Nations in January, so two alternatives will be needed in order to deploy Stefano Pioli’s double pivot.

One is guaranteed in Tonali but the second is missing. Tiemoue Bakayoko’s return is mentioned as a very possible option, while it is Pioli’s decision is to keep Pobega and not let him leave again even if on loan.

This way the coach can evaluate how much progress the 22-year-old has made and he could very well become the fifth midfielder in the depth chart, a wild card of sorts also able to play the No.10 role if needed or as a mezzala in a 4-3-3.
