Milan Player Ratings vs Inter: Tomori Saves Rossoneri Some Proud

Milan suffered a sixth consecutive defeat in the Derby della Madonnina as Inter sealed their 20th Serie A title with a 2-1 win. Stefano Pioli’s side slumped to a deserved loss in an ill-tempered encounter at San Siro to set an unwanted piece of history.

In addition to claiming bragging rights within the city, Inter became the first San Siro tenant to confirm the Scudetto after winning the Milan derby. An awful piece of defending saw Rossoneri fall behind midway through the first half as Francesco Acerbi’s free header put Nerazzurri in front. 

Only a few minutes into the second half, Inter doubled their lead through Marcus Thuram, putting the game beyond Milan’s reach. But the drama was yet to come. Fikayo Tomori pulled one back for Milan in the 80th minute, giving Pioli’s team a fighting chance in the closing stages. However, frustration got the better of the home side’s key figures.

Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria received straight reds deep into stoppages, while Denzel Dumfries followed them straight down the tunnel after a nasty altercation. Unpleasant scenes at San Siro changed nothing on the scoreboard as Milan extended their winless streak to four consecutive games in all competitions.

Mike Maignan – 7

Despite conceding twice, the French goalkeeper held up his end of the bargain tonight. It wasn’t his fault that Milan’s porous backline left him on the island.

Davide Calabria – 3.5

While the rate must feel generous, the captain left his heart and soul on the pitch, though his shortcomings on both ends of the field came to the fore.

Matteo Gabbia – 3.5

Tonight’s game unequivocally showed Milan must sign a new center-back in the summer. He’s not a Milan caliber by any stretch of imagination. 

Fikayo Tomori – 7

The consolation goal was a fitting reward for the Englishman’s spirited performance. His commitment and defensive prowess were the only reasons Milan avoided further catastrophe. 

Theo Hernandez – 3.5

His inability to make a difference caught up with him late as he lost his temper in stoppage time, largely thanks to an underwhelming display.

Yacine Adli – 4.5

With all due respect to his technical qualities, the Frenchman has no place in a title-bidding side. His notorious lack of pace saw him outmaneuvered by his Inter counterparts. 

Tijjani Reijnders – 5

While he has no pace issues, the Netherlands international must get familiar with his limitations if he’s to make a name for himself at Milan. Lost possession cheaply way too many times.

Yunus Musah – 5.5

It’s mainly Pioli’s fault that the USMNT midfielder looked like a headless chicken tonight. Played out of position, the youngster often had no idea what to do when in possession.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 5

The Englishman’s drop-off in form continues as he failed to impact the play and seemed uncomfortable whenever Milan needed him to inject some creativity into this inert side.

Christian Pulisic – 5.5

Again, it was Pioli who forced the United States captain to cover an unnatural position. It turned out to be a disaster.

Rafael Leao – 6

Despite wasting a glorious opportunity to make it 1-1 in the first half, the Portuguese forward was the only Milan star to have made Inter defenders sweat.
