Milan saw a Samuel Chukwueze goal disallowed against Sassuolo for perhaps the tightest offside call in Serie A history, as a portion of his shoulder was caught out.

The forward had found the net on a Rafael Leao cross from the left, but the offside flag was immediately up.

It proved much tighter than perhaps the official initially thought, because VAR showed that Martin Erlic had delayed the push up and his foot was almost level with Chukwueze.

Only the Semi-Automatic Offside Technology – which is already used in Serie A and from next season will be introduced in the Premier League – was able to identify the millimetres between them.

Ultimately, the footage showed a portion of Chukwueze’s shoulder was offside.

If it is a part of the body that a player can legally score a goal with, then it has to be considered when judging an offside position.

Serie A is unlikely to see much closer calls than this one.
