Serie A runners-up Milan have set their sights on in-demand RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko to replace the outgoing Olivier Giroud. Gazzetta dello Sports states the Italians are ready to shatter the club-record transfer fee to win the race for the Slovenia international.

As one of Europe’s most sought-after properties, Sesko has a host of admirers across the continent’s elite divisions. However, Milan couldn’t care less about the competition as they need a top player to fill the shoes of the veteran Frenchman, who’s on his way to Los Angeles FC.

Giroud has been instrumental to Stefano Pioli’s set-up these past few years and played a pivotal role in the title-winning 2021/22 campaign. Before his arrival, Milan had struggled with classic No. 9s, wondering between underachieving prospects and has-been stars.

Therefore, Milan are meticulously working on finding a suitable replacement. The club hierarchy holds Sesko in high regard, but luring him to San Siro will probably require a substantial financial sacrifice. In fact, it could take up to €50 million to convince Leipzig to sign the papers.

Pulling off such an arrangement would see Milan set a new club record for the most expensive signing. Rossoneri paid Juventus a whopping €47m to land Leonardo Bonucci in 2017. That move didn’t pan out as expected, with the experienced defender returning to Turin after a miserable season in Lombardy.

Unlike Bonucci, who changed Serie A allegiances in the autumn of his career, Sesko is still young and has ample room for improvement. At 20, he’s yet to reach his peak powers, and Milan could be the best destination to help him fulfill his potential.
