Former Juventus director general Luciano Moggi is backing Francesco Calzona's return to Napoli.

Calzona, a former Napoli assistant coach, has replaced Walter Mazzarri after his sacking this week.

Moggi told TMW: Calzona has always been (Maurizio) Sarri's second. At Lazio the coach doesn't sail in gold. Yes, he could return to the fold.

"I think (Aurelio) De Laurentiis' move is an end in itself, they give Calzona advice and he knows many Napoli players.

"The main move would have been to not let (Luciano) Spalletti or (Cristiano) Giuntoli go. In derogation of the sports law, the president took on the role of the general director and these are the results. When (Rudi) Garcia arrived it was clear that he was having difficulties."

On Mazzarri, he said: "An error. If Napoli had signed Calzona straight away it would have been better. It's not like he would have done who knows what... so now he will be able to fix all the messes made. And then in my opinion there will be Sarri's return."
