Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has lined up Wigan midfielder James McCarthy to fill Yohan Cabaye's shoes.
Pardew has joined Everton in the battle to sign the Republic of Ireland international with the relegated FA Cup winners' chairman Dave Whelan demanding around £15m.
Everton's ex-Latics boss Roberto Martinez - and the Magpies - are likely to value the 22-year-old at around £10m though.
Martinez has denied lodging a bid for the player he managed at the DW Stadium.

Martinez said: “There has been no bid made. I think it’s quite easy to understand that James is a player I signed at a young age.
“I have got huge admiration for him so it doesn’t take anyone much to create a little bit of a story.
“But while the window is open you always need to be actively looking around to see if you can get anyone to help the squad.”
