While Real Madrid is busy telling the free world it wants to sign Gareth Bale, England’s reigning player of the year might have other ideas. Tottenham is bracing itself for transfer bids, as rumors of interest from both the Spanish giant and Manchester United Bale gather steam. Bale hasn’t publicly said he wants to leave White Hart Lane, but he recently told friends that he’s open to joining United, according to the Star. “Gareth Bale has told pals he fancies a move to Manchester United,” the report says. “United are ready to offer £60 million [$91.5 million] in an attempt to take him to Old Trafford, and Tottenham last night refused to comment on whether an official bid had been made. “Spurs are desperate to keep hold of their star player, and chairman Daniel Levy has made it clear he would reject all advances for the player. “But Starsport understands the brilliant winger is interested in a move to the Premier League champions.” Bale’s scored 26 goals (in all competitions) in an outstanding 2012-13 campaign, which saw him lead Tottenham to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League. The Welshman is happy at Spurs and enjoys a close relationship with manager Andre Villas-Boas, teammates and fans. But he is also eager to play in the UEFA Champions League again — something Tottenham can’t offer this season. Real Madrid and United enter the 2013-14 season with new managers, who are looking to add firepower to their respective squads. Real has backed new boss Carlo Ancelotti with £61.6 million ($94 million) worth of new signings (Isco, Casemiro, Asier Illarramendi, and Daniel Carvajal), while United has added Wilfried Zaha and Guillermo Varela for £17.5 million ($26.7 million) ahead of David Moyes‘ first season in charge. Both clubs see Bale as a marquee signing that will please anxious fans and power their respective trophy hunts. PSG is also among Bale’s suitors, but the French champion might have some catching up to do in order to land the 24-year-0ld. Real Madrid’s charm offensive is well into its second year, while rumors of United’s interest emerged toward the end of last season, though the club has not commented on them. Recently, Bale spoke glowingly about Spanish soccer, music and culture. While Spain may pique his private interests, his next professional destination could be Manchester.
