Landon Donovan has been one of the faces of Major League Soccer for over a decade. That will continue for years to come. Donovan has agreed to re-sign with the Galaxy and MLS. The L.A. Galaxy and U.S. national team star will sign a new, multi-year contract, which will see him retain his “designated player” status, according to Sports Illustrated. Donovan’s current contract pays him $2.5 million in 2013 and it expires at the end of the calendar year. He has received “intriguing” offers from clubs in other countries, but none were compelling enough to take him away from Southern California. The 31-year-old took a three-month break from soccer earlier this season. He returned to action in March, saying he rediscovered his passion for the game. His recent performances suggest he is ready to attack the latter phase of his career with renewed vigor and add to new chapters to his own legend. He is chasing a record sixth MLS Cup title and is four goals away from becoming the league’s all-time leading scorer. The U.S. soccer icon will have plenty of time to face those challenges, and he’ll do it in familiar surroundings. Have a question for Marcus Kwesi O’Mard?
