After a disappointing campaign which has seen them knocked out of all three cup competitions and struggling to make the Premier League's top four, Liverpool are expected to be very active in the transfer market this summer.

The midfield is likely to be the main focus of their attempts to restore Jurgen Klopp's squad to its former high levels with Liverpool linked with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Mason Mount, and Matheus Nunes.

In defence, however, there are now question marks as to whether reinforcements are needed after a number of indifferent performances from Klopp's centre-backs.

Whilst Virgil van Dijk remains an automatic first choice, despite his form dipping, injuries to Ibrahima Konate, who now appears to be the number-one partner for the Dutchman, have limited his availability.

That has coincided with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip struggling for form and confidence leading to speculation that one or both players could be sold this summer alongside Nathaniel Phillips who is in need of a move to secure more regular game time.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Anfield hierarchy's search for a central defender could lead to a move for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka who is out of contract at the end of the season.

The Spanish outlet reports that Liverpool have 'positioned themselves' to sign the 23-year-old but face competition from Barcelona, PSG, Real Betis, Sevilla, Juventus, and both Milan clubs.

The Transfer Room Verdict

Ndicka would offer Klopp a left-footed option in the centre of his defence, something that he does not have in his squad currently. The fact the Frenchman is also available on a free transfer could mean this is one to watch this summer.
