Gianluca Scamacca became the first Italian striker to score an away brace against Liverpool but Pierluigi Casiraghi had already netted twice at Anfield for the Azzurri at Euro 96.

A Scamacca brace inspired Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday.

As reported by Sky Sport Italia, the ex-Sassuolo and West Ham striker became the first Italian player to score two goals in one game against the Reds at Anfield.

However, the first ever Italian player to bag a brace in the same stadium was ex-Lazio and Chelsea striker Casiraghi who scored twice against Russia in a Euro 96 group stage game.

Scamacca has scored six goals in the latest eight appearances across all competitions this season.

Italy coach Spalletti did not call him up for the March games against Venezuela and Ecuador, and the Atalanta striker said last night that the CT decision was ‘right.’
