Danny Murphy feels Tottenham Hotspur should turn down the opportunity to sign Timo Werner permanently.

In order to cope with Heung-Min Son’s absence during the Asia Cup and Manor Solomon’s injury, Tottenham decided to sign Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig in January. The loan move includes a buy option worth around £15 million.

Since returning to England, the German international has featured in 11 Premier League games and has managed to contribute towards five goals. He has had an impressive short stint so far and it has fuelled speculations that the club should consider the idea of signing him permanently.

During Spurs’ recent win over Nottingham Forest, Werner played a key role. He was a constant threat from the left flank and was the main architect behind Spurs’ first goal. The 28-year-old was the one who crossed the ball into the box that led to Murillo’s own goal.

Danny Murphy feels Werner has been a clever addition

On the back of his performance, former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy admitted that Werner has made a difference since joining the club. He added that it was clever business from his former club.

However, the 47-year-old feels that Spurs should not sign the £165k-a-week star permanently. Murphy doesn’t want his former club to fork out £15 million for the German and he feels there are better options out there.

Murphy said on BBC’s Match of the Day: “I think there is better out there depending on what you’ve got to spend and what you want to prioritise. I think it was a great gap filler and he’s done OK. But you want more goals from your widemen. He doesn’t score enough for me.”

While the 47-year-old is happy with Werner’s recent performances, he considers the German international to be a great short-term fix. According to the former Tottenham midfielder, the club should look at someone who can add more goals to the mix as he believes Werner doesn’t score enough goals to be a constant feature on their flanks.
