U.S. Women's National Team names official 2023 World Cup roster

The U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) is the most successful women's soccer team on the planet, with four World Cup titles to its name. As the 2023 Women's World Cup approaches this July in Australia and New Zealand, USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski announced the 23-person squad he'll bring overseas--with the help of some familiar faces.

President and First Lady Joe and Jill Biden, Taylor Swift, Shaquille O'Neal and more joined forces to share the official USWNT roster with the public.

Some names will be familiar to viewers of previous tournaments as Megan Rapinoe, Kelley O'Hara and Alex Morgan will return for their fourth consecutive World Cups, while Alyssa Naeher and Julie Ertz will return for their third. Crystal Dunn, Rose Lavelle, Lindsey Horan and Emily Sonnett all debuted in the last tournament and will return for their second run at the title.

Several experienced players, however, will be missing. Captain Becky Sauerbrunn was ruled out due to a foot injury while Mallory Swanson Pugh missed the roster after tearing her patella tendon in May.

But the USMNT isn't just bringing its well-known stars--the majority of the roster is comprised of World Cup debutantes. Trinity Rodman (daughter of basketball star Dennis Rodman) made the cut after a sparkling college career and a strong season with the Washington Spirit. Sophia Smith was selected duet to her stellar goal scoring form with the Portland Thorns. And Alyssa Thompson, one of this roster's youngest player at just 18, was chosen based on her boundless potential and competitive spirit.

The USWNT will kick off their World Cup title defense against Vietnam on July 22.
