MLSSoccer.com put together a fantastic two-part series on Chris Wondolowski’s lead up and finish to the last MLS regular season match in Portland as he tried to tie or break the single season goals record.
Wondolowski and his San Jose Earthquake teammates were aware of the record throughout the match. It was on their minds, and how could it not be? This is one of the biggest records of note the league has.
Roy Lassiter set the record in MLS’ inaugural season. It was fitting Wondo tied the record. Lassiter is still referenced and MLS history continues to evolve. It gives both men the glory together for a while.
Both players are excellent for American Soccer. They will carry the record forward with pride and dignity knowing there will come a time for more history to be made.
Interestingly, both are of minority dissent, Lassiter of African-American and Wondolowski of Native-American.
During the match against Portland, a penalty was called against the Portland goalkeeper. Of course...
