PLAYERS: Daniel Cormier
On the heels of his UFC 170 victory over Patrick Cummins, I figured it was a good time to go into the past and look at Daniel Cormier before his career in mixed martial arts began. Prior to his MMA career, Cormier was a tremendous amateur wrestler and was part of the U.S. Olympic team in wrestling twice, but only competed in the 2004 Olympics. Cormier’s wrestling was his main calling card at the beginning of his MMA career. His standing game as well as his punching power has improved seemingly with each bout he is in, but it is his wrestling that sets him apart from others in the sport. Cormier’s timing with getting into MMA has been perfect with the sport’s shift toward focusing immensely on wrestling over the last three or four years. This video is of Cormier in the 2001 NCAA Wrestling Championships. It is the final for the 184-pound weight class. His opponent: Cael Sanderson, in my opinion the great collegiate wrestler to ever live not named Danny Hodge. Sanderson entered this final undefeated for that season and his entire collegiate career.
