Lazio are on the verge of signing talented defender Mario Gila from Real Madrid, so what should they expect from the 21-year-old?

The Spanish defender is set to join the Biancocelesti on a loan deal with a €5 million buy option attached, with a 50% future resale clause also included. It’s a fairly low-risk deal for the Roman club, who now have a chance to see what Mario Gila is made of before deciding if they want to make his stay permanent.

Gila joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2019 from Espanyol’s youth system but failed to convince then-coach Zinedine Zidane of his qualities, so he remained relegated to the Castilla squad for his first two seasons in the Spanish capital.

Things changed when Carlo Ancelotti joined last summer, however. He quickly noticed the 21-year-old’s qualities and handed him his La Liga debut at the tail end of the season just gone. Despite his strong work with the Castilla squad, first-team development has been slow, so a move to a new club makes sense as he looks for consistent minutes.

With Real Madrid winning La Liga and the UEFA Champions League last season, they are the clear favourites once again for the 2022-23 campaign, and what better way to place your bets than on Sports Betting Canada?

Gila stands at 1.85m tall and is comfortable playing as both a centre-back and right-back. He is physically imposing and is known for both his decisive tackles and quick interceptions, meaning there’s a chance that he could immediately break into Maurizio Sarri’s first team in Rome.

The 21-year-old Spaniard is also appreciated for his pace and his ability to play the ball out from the back, suggesting that he’ll be the perfect fit for Sarri’s quick-moving 4-3-3 system. He’s also dangerous in set pieces and scored twice for the Castilla squad this season.

Gila has attracted attention from Serie A in the past; in January 2021 Sassuolo made an approach for the defender and reportedly submitted an offer, but Real Madrid were not keen to lose the prospect.

Many Real Madrid fans have expressed concern regarding the departure of the 21-year-old defender, giving the Lazio fans hope that he’ll be a strong acquisition this summer. It’s been a fairly poor transfer window so far from the Biancocelesti, so securing Gila on loan would finally be something for the supporters to get excited about.

Now the ball is in Gila’s court; the Spaniard has the chance to prove his mettle in Rome and command a spot in Sarri’s starting 11, and if things go well then €5 million will look like a huge bargain.
