World Cup security guard falls to death at same match where Grant Wahl passed away

A 24-year-old Kenyan man working as a security guard at the World Cup in Qatar has died after suffering a "serious fall" while on duty during Saturday's quarterfinals match between Argentina and the Netherlands.

According to a report by Adam Crafton of The Athletic, John Njau Kibue moved to Qatar one year ago. Details of Kibue's fall at Lusail Stadium "are unclear," but it is known that the event occurred after Argentina's win in the "early hours" on Saturday morning.

Crafton further reports that the worker was transported to Hamad Medical Hospital and was in "stable but critical condition" on Saturday, before passing away on Tuesday.

"Stadium medical teams immediately attended the scene and provided emergency treatment before he was transferred to Hamad Medical Hospital’s intensive care unit via ambulance. We regret to announce that, despite the efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away in hospital on Tuesday 13 December, after being in the intensive care unit for three days. His next of kin have been informed," a statement from the Qatar Supreme Committee reads. "We send our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time. Qatar’s tournament organisers are investigating the circumstances leading to the fall as a matter of urgency and will provide further information pending the outcome of the investigation. We will also ensure that his family receive all outstanding dues and monies owed."

American soccer journalist Grant Wahl died Friday while covering the same match, which initially drew much speculation given Wahl's brief detainment early in the tournament and outspoken views on Qatar's human rights record. Both Wahl's wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, and his brother, Eric Wahl, have since said that Grant Wahl's death was due to an aneurysm and no foul play was involved.

A second journalist, Qatari photojournalist Khalid al-Misslam, passed away on Saturday while covering the World Cup for local sports outlet Al Kass TV. Hassan Al-Thawadi, a high-ranking Qatari official in charge of helping to organize the 2022 World Cup, said in a late-November interview that roughly 400 to 500 migrant workers died during construction in advance of the event.

Lusail Stadium will host the World Cup final between Argentina and the winner of Wednesday's game between France and Morocco on Sunday.
