Opening night in Chicago (and elsewhere)

The NHL season began last night with 4 games. The headline game in Canada was Montreal vs. Toronto, because that’s just how Canada is. For the NHL though, undoubtedly, the big game was the reigning Cup champions against one of the teams from the largest market in North America. The Hawks were extremely subtle in their reminder to the world that Chicago was, indeed, the Champions...

MAKE SOME NOISE FOR THE BOYS! — Vancouver Canucks (@VanCanucks) October 8, 2015 The Canucks request that your noises be loud and non-specific. Don’t use words, that is to say. They specifically want those noises to be high pitched, as the Sedins only hear the higher octaves.

Central Clairvoyance

The NHL Season starts on Wednesday. Wednesday! In honor of that, I am going to write four quick prediction posts over the next couple of weeks. Today, we continue with the Central in which I will list the teams, in order that I suspect they will finish, as well as a small paragraph that may or may not have anything to do with anything. The NHL is so messed up, predictions don...

Gary Bettman at his creepiest in preseason presser

This was the imagery that NBC was able to capture of Gary Bettman during a press conference regarding the potential expansion into Quebec or Las Vegas. This is a look that has many layers. Look at those soulless eyes. That’s what I’m drawn to. This isn’t a real smile. He knows there is bad news for someone there. He’s putting on a good face for the crowd, but he knows he...

It’s important to read into preseason games

ITEM: The Minnesota Wild wiped the floor with the Winnipeg Jets in a preseason tune up game, winning 8-1. Let’s check out some comments*       These comments were from the Winnipeg Free Press. Naturally, it’s never too early to question the GM, nor blame the goalie. This wasn’t exactly a game full of A-listers, so I’m not worried for the Jets, but I am worried about...

Oh my God yes

It was 3 months and 5 days, but there is now hockey again. It’s just scrimmages, and they weren’t even taking notes in Boston, but there is hockey, dammit. We’re almost there.

They have different sticks in Columbus, or something

Boris Saad was dealt away from Chicago as part of the Blackhawks’ offseason diaspora. He was photographed today in his first time in his Blue Jackets uniform. As you can see, he is concerned and baffled by his stick. Either this means that the equipment in Columbus is substantially different than that used in Chicago, or that there is a lot more to training camp than I thought.

Barrett Jackmann finds the worlds tiniest giraffe

OK, yes, Barrett Jackman and his son, pictured in a tweet from the Predators, are standing on a ledge above the giraffe in the foreground, which gives the impression that the Jackmans are giants. That’s silly. But let’s talk about that giraffe in the distance. Either that giraffe is about 3 miles away, in which case the Nashville zoo has some impressive enclosure space, or...

Michael Neuwirth is a little on the nose

The Oilers don’t have any prospects

The Edmonton Journal is going through their top 25 Edmonton prospects, and today, they made it to #9. If I didn’t know any better, I would guess that they don’t like him, and that he might not actually be any good. It starts with the headline. If slow and steady wins the race, Edmonton Oilers prospect David Musil has both bases covered WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN. What bases?...

Calgary aspires to build Baymax

Calgary is attempting to build a multiuse facility to house, as it’s principle tenants, the Calgary Flames and Calgary Stampeders. As is always the case,  there will be gnashing of teeth and much back and forth over the funding of this facility, and where that funding will be sourced, and for how much. It will cost nearly a billion dollars. It would be weird if there wasn’t...

NHL.Com pun writers are on vacation

Every day during the season, I would check to see bow a terrible pun was shoehorned into the day’s headline. I almost admired whoever t was that was in charge of contorting player names enough to sound like they could be another real word. In that spirit, I’m glad the guy who does it is on vacation. I can barly tell what they are going for with either of these. I...

during the Gatorade NHL Skills Challenge Relay event of the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition at Nationwide Arena on January 24, 2015 in Columbus, Ohio. Don’t. Really, don’t. Oh no, is this really happening?

After seeing the success of the Coyotes, the NHL seems to be on board with expanding hockey in the desert. Never mind the fact that Vegas has a transient population with no tie to pro sports in general or the NHL specifically. No matter that they were one of the hardest hit towns by the recession. I don’t even have a problem with the gambling, because all the other issues are...

John Gibson is a cool kid

Anaheim netminder John Gibson has created a sensation with his new helmet (by sensation, I mean that it appeared on Puck Daddy) because everyone loves old video games. Pretty much anything involving the old games is going to be a winner, really popular with everyone. I mean, come on, Gibson has Duck Hunt on his helmet. Which is great because he plays for the Ducks. Ron MacLean is so high right now

I mean, I get it. The Oilers have been drafting at the top of the draft continuously for years now.  They should definitely have a boatload of talent at this point, and they undoubtedly do, but there is a reason that they keep making picks at the top of the draft. It’s because they can’t put it together, that they are terrible. Why would Connor McDavid be the one to turn the...
