Nathan MacKinnon’s 2014-15 is the perfect example of a sophomore slump. In his second year in the NHL, MacKinnon is poised to fall well short of matching his offensive numbers from his rookie seasons. To make matters worse, MacKinnon was on the receiving end of a brutal check from Sean Bergenheim which left MacKinnon with a broken nose.
There was no penalty on the play. As you...
Dustin Penner is most known for his pancake injury, but his reputation (what little there is) took a big step back after he made a rape joke on Twitter. Penner isn’t currently playing in the NHL and he apparently had time for this “joke” which no one found funny.
After the initial backlash started, Penner defended his comment.
Apparently being opposed to a rape joke makes...
There have been some pretty wild trade rumors circulating around the Chicago Blackhawks and Patrick Sharp. Though trade rumors are surrounding just about every NHL team as the deadline nears, the ones involving Sharp and the Blackhawks were a bit more personal.
Numerous outlets reported that there was some serious tension in the locker room and some rumors went a step further...
In one of the most innovative and surprising trades in recent memory, Nathan Horton of the Columbus Blue Jackets was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for David Clarkson. Full stop. No salary retained. Nothing else was added to this deal to sweeten the pot for either side. For as simple as it was presented on the surface, this deal was anything but.
Clarkson (all situations):
The New Jersey Devils appear to be well on their way to missing the playoffs this season. Barring some sort of late miracle push, the Devils will miss the playoffs for the third consecutive seasons and for the fourth time in five seasons. Normally a stretch of poor play results in changes in the front office, but the Devils appear to be content with GM Lou Lamoriello running the...
Usually when we talk about the ECHL it’s for one of two reasons: two squads enjoyed a line brawl or some team is going to wear a crazy jersey. This time it’s the latter reason as the Rapid City Rush are going to be sporting some Dr. Seuss sweaters and they’re awesome.
Look what just arrived!!!

Ondrej Pavelec has a new mask and it’s bound to make Bruce Springsteen fans pretty happy. On one side the Jets goaltender has an image of Springsteen while on the other he pays tribute to the cover of Springsteen’s Born to Run.

Sometimes the best goals in the NHL are the ones that don’t even count. While you sit and ponder the validity and insanity of that previous sentence, sit back and enjoy a crazy non-goal from Corey Tropp.
Since the puck landed on top of the goal, the play was blown dead. Still, Tropp showed off some insane coordination by poking the puck into the air and swatting it in.
A couple of weeks back I wrote an article about some players to avoid on deadline day. This time around I am here to write about some players that can provide some help for fringe and not so fringe teams. Contracts filled with value are the name of the game and these players have demonstrated their value in a multitude of ways.
All graphs are from 2012-13 through the current date...
NBCSN’s Rivalry Night actually lived up to its billing when the Penguins took on the Capitals on Wednesday. It wasn’t surprising to see the two teams fighting, but the location of the fight – the Penguins’ bench – was pretty noteworthy.
Altercations like this one only make us yearn for the playoffs.

Another week has passed in the NHL and the world kept turning. Trades have been made, extensions have been signed and fans have aired their grievances. All is right and I am here to show you some of the best of the week that was.

By and large, NHL general managers seem to undervalue third and fourth liners in July. So many good ones go unsigned well into free agency. To wit, Daniel Winnik, whom both numbers people and non-numbers people agree is a good player, wasn’t signed until July 28th. And he just fetched second and fourth round draft picks, going from Toronto to Pittsburgh. The Penguins could have...
As people who follow the game of hockey, we all have personal bias’ as to who are the best offensive players in the National Hockey League. The same names always seem to come up: Ovechkin, Kane, Crosby, Perry and the list goes on. What happens when we take our personal bias out of the equation and look solely at the numbers? Do we even have numbers to measure this?
J.T. Miller thought he had an easy goal after the puck hit off the post and deflected directly to him. Karri Ramo was way out of position and the net was open and inviting. Miller snapped the shot … only to be denied by Ramo’s mitt.

It is that time of year again where everyone is an armchair GM and believes they know best for each team. It is a fun exercise in practice and luckily as I have no relation to an NHL front office, I can take a look at a few teams and peg them as teams in need of a move. Let us take a look shall we?

What goes into this ranking? Shot attempts for percentage, offensive/defensive zone starts, goals for percentage, scoring chances for percentage and puck luck are the elements of this analytic power ranking. Last week’s NHL Analytics Power Rankings can be found here. Keep in mind that based on the 2013-14 NHL season, 13 out of 16 playoff teams ranked in the top 16 of these same...
When a player falls to his knees, that normally results in the loss of possession. Mikael Granlund doesn’t abide by that rule and was able to keep the puck away from three different Stars. Incredible display of skill by Granlund.

This was an exciting week of hockey fights around the NHL. We had a ton of solid fights to choose from for this week’s list and it was tricky picking just five. Your opinion may vary, but we think this was one of the best group of fights we’ve seen all season long.
5. Michael Latta (WAS) vs Robert Bortuzzo (PIT) – Feb. 17th
Pretty solid fight for the fifth position, don’t...
Cal Clutterbuck skating past Vancouver’s bench looked innocent enough, but it was clear on the replay that he actually swung his stick into the Canucks’ bench. As you might imagine, the Canucks were livid.

Outdoor games are supposed to be special experiences for both the players participating and the fans attending the game. The uniqueness of an outdoor game has been watered down now that the NHL has introduced Stadium Series games. Still, the games draw big numbers and players routinely mention how much they enjoyed the experience. Well, except for the LA Kings.

Who doesn’t love a good ol’ fashioned line brawl? The AHL’s Hershey Bears and Bridgeport Sound Tigers left all of their anger out on the ice as a full line brawl erupted on Saturday. Even the goaltenders were involved in this one.

David Backes has dished out plenty of huge hits in his career, but he was on the receiving end of a beautiful Kris Letang hip check on Saturday. This clean hit flipped Backes and thankfully no one was hurt on the play.

Niklas Kronwall scored in overtime to give the Red Wings a 7-6 victory over the Stars. Emotions were running pretty high in a game which featured an unusual 7-6 scoreline and Kari Lehtonen was pretty upset after Kronwall ended things in OT.

All of the talk about expansion in the NHL has centered around the city of Las Vegas. As the league continues to monitor and survey interest in Vegas, other future expansion sites have faded out of the headlines. Vegas is the hot topic, but it’s clear the NHL will need to add a total of two teams in order to balance the lopsided Conferences.
Where would a new team play? According...
Corey Crawford is going to want this one back. The puck was dumped in harmlessly into the Chicago zone, but Crawford mishandled it with his stick and the rest is history.
