Xavier within range of A-10 title, NCAA berth

Coach Chris Mack refused to apply too much significance to the Musketeers' missed opportunity Feb. 4 at Memphis. "We win a game like this and we lose the next seven, nobody cares," he said. Still, with Xavier's NCAA Tournament prospects teetering on the bubble, the Musketeers needed to close out the Tigers. Xavier had an 11-point lead with less than seven minutes...

Xavier needs better defense down the stretch

The Atlantic 10 conference is much improved this year. It's also a more balanced league, which bodes well for Xavier heading into the season's final month. Despite the Musketeers' recent struggles, they entered February just a half-game out of first place. Rhode Island's stunning win at Dayton created a three-way tie at the top of the A-10 standings with UMass, La...

With Xavier faltering, who’s the new A-10 favorite?

It requires only two short sentences to sum up the chaos in the Atlantic 10 in the wake of an unpredictable opening three weeks of conference play. Five teams are tied for first place with matching 4-2 records. None of them is Xavier. Saint Louis' 73-68 victory at Xavier on Wednesday night suggests the arrival of a new era in the Atlantic 10, one in which at least for this season...

Chris Mack questions Musketeers' desire

When Xavier plays defense well, even for limited periods, it wins, as evidenced by impressive comeback victories over Purdue and Vanderbilt. When it doesn't, events such as the 87-72 loss at Dayton on Jan. 21 will occur. The solution appears to be simple: play harder. The Musketeers did just that during a four-game winning streak that was snapped in the loss at Dayton. But Xavier...

Recruiting Analysis

Xavier's recent struggles have me thinking about recruiting, specifically front court recruiting, in Miller's last year and Mack's first few years. Here is a breakdown of each recruiting class 2008 Frease - Very highly rated recruit that has underperfomed somewhat. Know for inconsistent effort. Still a decent center though. Holloway - Decommit from IU. Great...

Examining the Xavier Musketeers

The Xavier Musketeers have had a tumultuous season to say the least. They came out of the gate 8-0 with wins over Vanderbilt, Georgia, Purdue and Cincinnati. A brawl against the Bearcats sent Tu Holloway, Mark Lyons, Dez Wells and the winning streak to the bench. Xavier got blown out against Oral Roberts at home, dominated by Long Beach State and upset by horrible Hawaii before...

Game Notes: St. Joseph’s at Xavier

by Rodger Bohn / @rodgerbohn While St. Joe‘s vs Xavier may not pop off as “game of the week” to most college hoops observers, it was a very crucial game in the eyes of NBA decision makers. You see, Xavier and St. Joe’s bring the two best point guards that the A-10 has to offer to the table and they were set to go head to head. St. Joe’s brought Carl...

Dangerous Xavier chasing redemption

CINCINNATI - Xavier coach Chris Mack isn't ready to shout it from the nearby mountaintops, but his team is still here. Xavier is still not on your computer, fancy phone screen or newspaper ranked in the Top 25, but that's OK. It's an absence that's well earned, frankly, but one that's just wrong. And one that's not going to last much longer. A more reserved...

Xavier win streak bringing confidence back

Xavier appears to be regaining its confidence, although coach Chris Mack insists that's something the Musketeers never lost."Our kids are confident all the time," Mack said. "Sometimes we have to tell them not to be so confident. Guys are just playing. That's all I ask of them, to play hard. And it starts with our defensive intensity."The Musketeers stretched...

Strong first-half defense leads Xavier's rout

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Freshman Dez Wells dunked his way to 16 points with nine rebounds, and Xavier's defense was back in form for the first time in a month, steadying the Musketeers to a 78-50 victory over Duquesne on Wednesday night. Xavier (11-5, 2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference) got back-to-back wins since a brawl against rival Cincinnati on Dec. 10 resulted in suspensions and left...

Slump over, Xavier starting to have fun again

Xavier coach Chris Mack tried hard to maintain his composure, even as he calmly addressed the myriad questions pertaining to his team's recent slide. But following a stunning 10-point loss at La Salle, the Musketeers' fifth defeat in six games, Mack had seen enough. He banished his players to the team bus following the game and called the performance, particularly on offense...

The Halfway Post- Satanic Verses

This my 6666th post on this board. Call it the Satanic Verses because I believe that for the last month, we've been through Hell and back. I cannot remember a rougher month for XU in the last 30 years. But, it's over and if this is the worst that my school ever has to go through, it's tolerable. Time to "reflect" errrr, ahhhh... move on to the second half...

Xavier gets back on track, downs Fordham 67-59

Mark Lyons' 20 points and Andre Walker's 14 rebounds were just what the doctor ordered as Xavier posted a 67-59 win over a much improved Fordham Ram squad Saturday afternoon in Manhattan. The win evened the Muskies' Atlantic 10 record to 1-1 and saw them start to get back to the brand of basketball that helped them start the season 8-0. Continue reading.
