'Awful': Shapovalov Hits Back At 'Not Giving Everything' Claims By Former Coach Youzhny
Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Denis Shapovalov was not impressed with some comments made by his former coach and hit back at Mikhail Youzhny on social media.

The last time Denis Shapovalov did anything of note on a tennis court was during the summer of 2021 when former player Mikhail Youzhny coached him.

The Russian worked well with Shapovalov, guiding him all the way to the Wimbledon semi-final, among other things, but they stopped working together at the end of that year.

Shapovalov didn't have the best finish to the year, and as Youzhny recently revealed, there was quite a bit of tension between them as they had opposing views on how to do some things.

Since then, Shapovalov's career hasn't had an upward trajectory due to some inconsistent play and generally a lot of injuries this year. He never quite found the same tennis again, but he's hopeful ahead of 2024.

In the meantime, the Canadian was bewildered by the comments made by Youzhny and reacted to X with some pretty harsh words towards his former coach.

Awful how can someone can go out of their way to say i’m not giving everything for my tennis when i’ve dedicated my whole life to it from the age of 5. Not to mention being injured since Wimbledon, rehabbing and doing everything I can every single day just to get back on court.

Shapovalov responds to Youzhny

The Canadian certainly took those comments personally, which is understandable, but Youzhny was also dead serious when he made the comments. We don't really know which side of the story is correct, though Shapovalov has been dedicated to the sport.

He wouldn't have become one of the better players in the world if he hadn't been dedicated and worked really hard. Hopefully, that work pays off in 2024 after some very unfortunate injuries.
