Spanish tennis ace Carlos Alcaraz moved out of the top two in the ATP rankings for the first time since his rapid rise to the top of the game with him winning the US Open in 2022. He was replaced by Jannik Sinner as the new World No. 2. While many worry that it might affect the youngster, Mats Wilander feels that it is a blessing in disguise for Alcaraz.

The former Swedish tennis player has talked about the pressure Alcaraz must be feeling every time he steps onto the court. Wilander also likened the Spaniard with Nick Kyrgios who is known for his on-court antics. The tennis expert has said that Alcaraz is being expected to do things other than just playing tennis.

Wilander feels that fans are expecting Alcaraz to pull off some unbelievable saves and hit a few astounding shots here and there. The Swedish opined that Alcaraz is expected to entertain the fans apart from winning tennis matches, which is somehow putting pressure on him.

Carlos Alcaraz is dealing with something that maybe Nick Kyrgios had to deal with at times, which is people are expecting more of Carlos Alcaraz than just winning tennis matches. They are expecting him to hit great shots, to make these unbelievable saves defensively, and then turn it around. Mats Wilander opined.

He then claimed that if it goes this way, the Spaniard will have a tiring career. Nevertheless, Wilander opined that as Alcaraz has dropped out of the top two, it might be a blessing in disguise for him with fans not expecting too much now.

I think for him, it's going to be quite tiring throughout a whole career to always feel like not only does he have to win, but he does feel like I have to perform in the entertainment part. I think falling out of the top two, it's most probably a little bit of a relief. Mats Wilander said about Carlos Alcaraz dropping out of the top two.

Mats Wilander feels Carlos Alcaraz can become second most important player in tennis

Apart from talking about Carlos Alcaraz‘s struggles, Mats Wilander also discussed the 20-year-old’s popularity and how he can become the second most important player in tennis. Wilander feels that Alcaraz brings something similar to the table as Roger Federer.

The Swedish tennis expert says that opponents enjoy playing against Alcaraz as he has a range. Wilander then went on to declare that the Spaniard can be the second most important player after Federer but also admitted that there will always be issues with his consistency.

I think Carlos Alcaraz could become the second most important tennis player to ever play our sport because of what he brings to the court. But that doesn't mean that the consistency in the rankings is going to be in the same way as a Novak Djokovic or even like a Jannik Sinner. It's not the way he plays tennis. Mats Wilander said about Carlos Alcaraz to Eurosport.

Speaking of Alcaraz’s consistency, the Spaniard has struggled to win titles as frequently as he is expected to. For example, Alcaraz won his first title at the Indian Wells Open since his Wimbledon win last year. He then suffered a heartbreaking loss in Miami and now has pulled out of Monte Carlo Masters.
