Lorenzo Musetti says he felt ‘sorry’ for Novak Djokovic in the US Open final as he felt the Serbian ‘absolutely deserved’ the Grand Slam.

Djokovic came within one match of achieving something no one had done for more than 50 years – winning every major of the season.

After claiming the Australian Open, the French Open, and the Wimbledon titles, he got all the way to the final of the US Open too.

However, there he was stopped in his tracks by Daniil Medvedev, who took ruthless advantage of the pressure Djokovic was under to win his first major in straight sets.

That saddened Musetti, who has often practiced with Djokovic, with the Italian admitting he was rooting for the world number one.

“I thought he was immortal and instead even the greatest champions are crushed by the pressure.

“I didn’t see the whole match, I admit I slept, but I saw he was very very tense.

“I was sorry because I cheered for him, he absolutely deserved to complete the Grand Slam, even though Medvedev played an extraordinary tournament.

“Nole is a very special person. Very nice, I think he really deserved to complete the Calendar Grand Slam.”
