April 28, 2013 — After falling ill and being readmitted to a Miami hospital, Ivo Karlovic is now recovering from an official diagnosis of viral meningitis according to Croatian media outlet Večernji list. When news first broke out over social media two days ago that Karlovic was hospitalized, initial reports suspected a “mild stroke.” Večernji list then updated its coverage, stating that it was “inflammation of the brain through a possible insect bite.” Today, however, an official statement has been released via Ivo and his wife in Miami, stating: “Ivo did not have a stroke, as some outlets have stated; rather, he has viral meningitis (inflammation of the meninges of the brain). We ask for privacy during his recovery process. We thank everyone for their support and well wishes.” Karlovic’s sister Ana, a sports psychologist, also noted: “Some have reported that the (diagnosis) was a stroke, without any verification.
