It has been confirmed that Novak Djokovic will start his grass preparations at the maiden Mallorca Championships by playing in the doubles tournament.

The event, which is an ATP 250, was due to make its debut in 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

When it goes ahead, it will be the first time that an ATP Tour tournament has been contested in Mallorca since 2002 and also the first one hosted on grass in Spain.

The announcement was made by Edwin Weindorfer, Director of the tournament who confirmed that Djokovic will use the courts to gain grass practice before Wimbledon as well as competing in the doubles.

“We are very pleased that Novak Djokovic is starting his preparation for the climax of the season at Wimbledon at the Mallorca Championship,” said Weindorfer.

“After Roland Garros, he will focus on training at the Mallorca Country Club in the coming days, and will also help the tournament is the center of attention by participating in the doubles competition.”

Top singes seeds at the event include US Open Champion Dominic Thiem, who will be hoping his poor season will improve on grass, Pablo Carreno Busta and Casper Ruud.

“Having another star like Dominic Thiem, who won the US Open in New York in September, is also a great honor for our tournament and our new club,” said Weindorfer,

Djokovic will also attend the official opening of the Center Court at the Mallorca Country Club on June 18 featuring an exhibition match between the world number one’s coach Goran Ivanisevic and Tommy Haas.
