Sam Querrey saved the United States from an embarrassing collapse in Jacksonville, Fla. Querrey defeated Thiago Alves of Brazil 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on Sunday to give the US a 3-2 victory in the first round of the Davis Cup. With the victory, the Americans advance to face Serbia in the quarterfinals, which will be played in April. The US had led 2-0 after Querrey and John Isner easily won Friday's singles matches, but Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares kept the Brazilians alive with a stunning, five-set win over the world's No. 1 ranked doubles team of twin brothers Mike and Bob Bryan on Saturday. Then, in the first singles match Sunday, Thomaz Bellucci rallied to beat Isner 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-3 to force the fifth and deciding match -- and set up Querrey to save the day for the United States. -- The Associated Press contributed to this report.
