REVEALED: Jannik Sinner to end Novak Djokovic’s reign as World No.1 irrespective of how far he goes at Roland Garros, here’s how
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Novak Djokovic ‘s spot in the ATP rankings is in danger as only reaching the Roland Garros final may save him. If this doesn’t happen, Italy’s Jannik Sinner will be crowned as the newest World No.1 player.

Djokovic has not yet given his best this season, losing four tournaments he played without a title. His last title came in November when he won the Nitto ATP Finals by beating Sinner.

As the Serb failed at the Italian Open with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Alejandro Tabilo, it gave Sinner the chance to become the first Italian to be ranked as No.1. Sinner’s Roland Garros result doesn’t matter for him to climb to the top. Djokovic will be 1,090 points ahead before the Roland Garros but will need to defend 2000 points, while Sinner needs to defend just 45 and if he reaches the final, he will remain as World No.1 even if Djokovic wins his 25th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic lifted his third Roland Garros title last year by beating Norway’s Casper Ruud easily in straight sets. Unlike last year in which he won multiple tournaments, including the Australian Open, French Open, and the US Open, Djokovic failed to even advance to the final of the four tournaments he played this year.

On the other hand, Sinner has been enjoying his best season until the hip injury he suffered during the Madrid Open hampered his progress. Due to that injury, he withdrew from the quarterfinal against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Spanish capital.

The 22-year-old has an impressive 28-2 win-loss record this year, and his two defeats came against Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Sinner has also lifted three titles, including his first Australian Open trophy.

Novak Djokovic lost in Rome after getting hit by a water bottle

After his win over Corentin Moutet in his first Rome Open match, a water bottle from a spectator hit Novak Djokovic on his head. Though at first, he assured everything was all right, it was after his defeat in the third round that the Serb revealed in detail what happened in his hotel.

That guy leaned over the fence, and the bottle dropped from his rucksack and landed on my head. Novak Djokovic said after the match

Djokovic revealed he had to endure the pain, and it impacted his match against Alejandro Tabilo as it affected his concentration and rhythm. He found the entire thing “a bit concerning.”

It was unexpected. I wasn't even looking up. Then I felt a very strong hit on the head. That has really impacted me. After that, I got medical care. I went through half an hour of nausea, dizziness, blood, and a lot of different things. Novak Djokovic added

Djokovic will next play at Roland Garros, scheduled to start on May 20 (the main draw on May 26th). The final will be played on June 9.
