Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Italy’s Camila Giorgi , 32, retired from tennis on Tuesday (May 7th), as per the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). She made no official announcement and silently bid adieu to the sport.

Her name was included in the list of ‘Retired Players’ on the ITIA website. And though the 32-year-old made no official announcement, the Italian Tennis Federation (FITP) confirmed the same. One can expect her to give the reason behind retiring at such an early age in the near future.

A WTA 1000 title in Montreal, best ranking at number 26 WTA, and 4 overall trophies in her career. Camila Giorgi says goodbye to tennis at the age of 32.  The FITP posted on May 8th

Several players have made a U-turn after announcing their decision to retire. If Giorgi also changes her mind, she cannot make a return to tennis without making herself available for dope testing at least six months before her first match.

Camila Giorgi last played at the Miami Open

Camila Giorgi has not played a single match since the Miami Open in March this year. In her Round of 64 match, she faced World No.1 Iga Swiatek and easily got knocked out with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-1.

Giorgi played five tournaments this year (Brisbane International, Australian Open, Linz Open, Indian Wells Masters, and the Miami Open). In all of these tournaments, she couldn’t make it to the fourth round. At the Australian Open, she was defeated by former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka in three sets.

Her best performance at a Grand Slam event came at the 2018 Wimbledon Championship when she reached the quarterfinals. In that match, she lost in three sets to 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams

Giorgi was born in Macerata, Italy, and turned pro in 2006. Her first title came at an ITF event in 2019 and two years later, she made her debut in the Grand Slam main draw at the Wimbledon Championship.

Giorgi has made it to the third round of the Australian Open five times (2015, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023). She has lifted four WTA titles, including the 2021 Montreal Open, the biggest win of her career. In the final, she faced then fourth seed Karolina Pliskova and defeated her in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.

Her first WTA title came at the Rosmalen Open, a WTA 250 event. In the final, she defeated Belinda Bencic in straight sets to lift the title.
