Serena Williams’ former coach Rennae Stubbs was left impressed by Coco Gauff as the American WTA star fought hard during her semifinal match at the 2024 Indian Wells. As Gauff faced Greek tennis ace Maria Sakkari for a spot in the final, the 19-year-old saved three match points to force a decider after losing the opening set.

As Sakkari took the first set 6-4, Gauff made a comeback in the second set and forced a decider. However, with the Greek also firing on all cylinders, the set went into a tiebreak. The two players fought a neck-to-neck battle here as well.

However, Coco Gauff managed to keep herself afloat as she won the tiebreaker 7-5. The American star saved three match points to win the second set. This gritty performance from the reigning US Open champion caught the eyes of fans as well as renowned coach Rennae Stubbs.

While a renowned journalist hailed Gauff for her “unreal grit”, the Australian coach heaped praise on Gauff for her determination. Stubbs hailed the 19-year-old for her ability to fight.

Coco Gauff fails to save the match though

While Coco Gauff staged a comeback in the second set and forced a decider, she could not save the match as Maria Sakkari comfortably took the third set. The Greek ace quickly wrapped things up in the decider as she won it 6-2.

Gauff looked out of gas as Sakkari landed winners with ease in the third set. She raced to a 4-1 lead in the third set without much fuss. Gauff then won a game to give her fans a ray of hope. However, Sakkari was alert enough to not commit mistakes this time around.

The Greek WTA star won the next two games to close the match in her favor. Maria Sakkari won 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2 in two hours and 41 minutes. She will now meet Iga Swiatek in the final. The Polish ace thumped Marta Kostyuk to book herself a spot in the summit clash.
