Ons Jabeur vs Marketa Vondrousova

Shane:

Ons Jabeur will bring a level of experience to this match that Marketa Vondrousova can not match. This is Jabeur’s third final in her last five Slams. Vondrousova played in the 2019 French Open final but had not returned to the Slam quarterfinals until earlier this week. Both women earned their way to this final with very impressive victories. Still, Jabeur’s three most recent wins over Petra Kvitova, Elena Rybakina, and Aryna Sabalenka is one of the more impressive Slam feats in recent memory.

In this match, Vondrousova will look to use her crafty style of play to keep Jabeur off-balance. Unfortunately for the Czech, I believe Jabeur is locked in and ready to capture her first career Grand Slam title. She will not let any lapses in form tank her play, as she has responded to adversity well throughout the tournament.

It’s been a brilliant tournament for both–one that has come as rather a surprise as well given their form coming into Wimbledon. That’s particularly true of Marketa Vondrousova, who had never previously been past the second round at Wimbledon. Ons Jabeur had a rather better record at Wimbledon, but had been having an indifferent season by her high standards.

Both have been excellent so far at the All England Club and both will no doubt be desperate to get their hands on their first Grand Slam trophy in what is a second Grand Slam final for both. But though it has the makings of a close match, it is ultimately hard to look past Jabeur, as well as Vondrousova has played. After coming so close last year, she now has the chance to take on a player who, unlike Elena Rybakina, can’t take the racquet out of her hands. Expect the Tunisian to take advantage.

It is a clash of two inspiring finalists, although one of them was wholly unexpected. Ons Jabeur has been an inspiration to Tunisia and to women in particular in that region for some time, and is into her second consecutive Wimbledon final. Marketa Vondrousova has surprised the tennis world with her run. She is a former French Open finalist, but had only previously managed one match win at Wimbledon. The Czech player has also battled back from various injuries to achieve what she has.

Vondrousova has a chance, but it is hard not to give Jabeur the edge. Coming through two high quality matches from a set down in the quarterfinal and semifinal will have given the Tunisian so much confidence. Vondrousova was actually slightly below her best against Elina Svitolina, but benefited from the Ukrainian running out of steam after the run she had. Add in the more recent experience Jabeur has in Grand Slam finals, and I think she will win.

There has been a genuine carefree nature to Ons Jabeur’s tennis this fortnight. Last year, her Wimbledon and US Open runs were fraught with nerves and angst where this year she’s almost laughed in the face of adversity. She’s dropped the opening set to three Grand Slam champions and comeback in all three matches playing consistent and versatile tennis. What I loved most about her win against Aryna Sabalenka was her returning—the Belarusian didn’t serve badly, Jabeur just glued every single one of her returns to the baseline.

Marketa Vondrousova has weapons. She has a troublesome lefty forehand that can pin folk into the backhand corner; drop shots that will leave most scratching their heads; serves that will leave players returning from the sidelines. On a grass court, however, Jabeur should be able to counter all of the above—slices from her backhand side; her own brand of drop shots; returning from another planet.

It looks as though Jabeur isn’t going to beat herself. This is finally her time in the sun.

Manuel:

Both players have had great campaigns at Wimbledon and will be looking to win their first Slam after previous disappointments in Slam finals. Vondrousova won both meeting between the pair this year, but on grass Jabeur is clearly a tougher nut to crack and given how she’s played so far in this tournament it does feel like it’s finally her time to win a Slam final, at the third time of asking.
Prediction: Jabeur in 3
