Long distance runner Mo Farah was one of the great stories of the 2012 London Olympics, thanks to his double Olympic win in the 10,000 and 5,000 m races, his “Mobot” post victory celebration, and his all-around infectious personality. Farah became a worldwide phenomenon, and his fame reached the far corners of the globe, except for this New Orleans reporter’s house, because it’s painfully obvious she’s a) never heard of Mo Farah, and b) didn’t bother doing her pre-interview research… Farah was in the Big Easy for Sunday’s Rock ’n’ Roll New Orleans Half Marathon, where the Somali-born British track and field star took claimed victory in a course record time of 1 hour 59 minutes. With the win came the obligatory interview with local news station WDSU 6 and reporter LaTonya Norton, who asks Farah the cringeworthy question, “Haven’t you run before? This isn’t your first time?” Yes LaTonya, this fellow just hopped off a plane, threw on a pair of running shoes, and proceeded to set a course record for a 13.1 mile race. She’s like a young, female Edward R. Murrow with those journalism skills she’s got going on there. Credit Farah for keeping his composure and responding to the obviously stupid question with tact and class, although a better, more American retort would have been to whip out his pair of gold medals and scream “These ain’t just fancy nipple warmers, baby!” then rip off his mic and walk away.
